| SCHOOL PROGRAMS |
| The Fifth Ohio Light Artillery are committed to furthering the education of school children by offering schools our resources and presenting the Civil War visually. We can offer as little as a single soldier appearing in a classroom or as much as a whole day program with multiple lecture stations and weapon and cannon firings. In an all day program we can handle multiple classes rotating thru "stations". Stations may consist of ; Camp and Soldiers life- We set up a typical single camp and show how soldiers would eat, sleep and what they would wear and the equipment they would use, both Union and Confederate. Weapons- We will display small arms and muskets, explain the workings of each and the progression of technology. We can do musket firings as permitted. Infantry Drill- At this station an instructor will put the students thru several infantry drills and teach them about marching. Most of the soldiers life in the infantry was spent doing drills! Medical - We have a military surgeon explain the tools he used and the medical challenges that the battles and life in general presented to the 19th century soldier. Artillery- A certified artillery instructor explains how a cannon works and will train a crew, using students. They go through the paces of firing a Civil War era cannon. We do not fire a cannon during this instruction. This also gives an opportunity for some instruction using what level of mathmatics being taught in regards to Physics and Geometry. Artillery Firing-We can, as safety and school preferrance allows, fire the cannon using the Fifth Ohio's certified artillery crew at the conclusion of the program. We feel that the expierence of the Sights, Smells and Sounds of this program as well as our instruction adds to whatever is taught in school. We will meet with the staff and explain what we offer and will follow any guidlines presented to us. We can add or detract programs according to what is requiered. We will recommend what safety measures that will have to be agreed on and what agencies must be contacted and what permits will have to be attained in advance. We have a proven safety record and have done this for several school systems. WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE DOING. At no time is anyone in danger as long as we are in control of safety measures presented by us or the government. At anytime we feel that its not safe, we will not proceed with that part of the program. Unfortunatly, we are limited with our schedule for full emersion day programs but can at times fit in limited smaller programs. If interested, contact by email, reenactorcivilwar@yahoo.com |
